USSD works for even non-smartphone users

Many of the mobile phone users around the country still have non-smartphone mobiles. Theirs is either a black and white or a simple old Nokia model. Thankfully, with the use of USSD they too can carry out transactions and check their balance. You don’t need a very high tech gadget in order to access your bank account details via USSD.

With the ongoing demonetization effect, you wouldn’t even have to tell them. Many people have already shifted to digital wallets and are making use of payment portals like Paytm. However, the rural areas are the ones that are bearing the brunt. They do not have high end cell phones neither do they have regular internet access to be able to carry out transactions. USSD is the only thing that can come to their rescue, which is why it is important to learn how to use it.

If you have any elders in your house who are incapable of handling transactions based online, you must share this method with them.

What is USSD exactly?

USSD is really an easy method of carrying out cashless transaction. It is the short form for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data. This type of interface has been constructed by the National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP).

This type of technology is used by your telecom operator to give you information on your mobile phone. Also the NUUP interface decides the parties (in this case your bank and the telecom operator), between whom this information exchange takes place. This technology makes use of the GSM network to transmit the data.

That being said, this feature works on all smartphones and it will also work on black and white display feature phones. If you have a mobile phone in your hand, it will work on it.

What are the benefits of using USSD based banking?

  • Safety: The first thought is whether it is safe or not. The government tells us that it is in fact, safer than mobile SMS based banking.
  • No installation: Unlike other features of banking, it does not need you to install an app. You don’t need to download anything to use USSD.
  • Easy to use menu: The USSD application comes forward with its own generated menu. The interactive menu makes it easier to navigate the feature.
  • GPRS not required: It does not require GPRS connectivity. It works well on the voice connectivity forum. This means that you do not need to use data charge to use this feature.
  • Works on GSM: Do you have a GSM based SIM card? Then you will be able to use this feature. If you are not sure, rest assured most SIM cards we use are GSM based.

Getting ready to use USSD services

To get ready to use your bank account via USSD you will first and foremost have to visit your nearest bank branch and get your mobile number registered. After it has been registered, you will be given a Mobile Money Identifier or MMID.

Along with the MMID you will have to ask for your personal MPIN. If you are unsure, call your bank’s customer care number to avail them.

How to use USSD (in English)?

Here we will tell you how to use USSD’s different features. This is the same process you will use no matter which language you switch to (more on this later). However, this is the basic method of using it –

  1. Welcome screen

Type *99*# on your phone and a welcome screen opens up on your mobile. After this you will be presented with a screen where you have to enter your MMID. You have to enter the MMID that is allotted to your number. If you do not have an MMID then you can type 9017001 which is a default MMID. MMIDs are to recognize the bank branch which the customer belongs to.

  2. Balance Enquiry

Now there will be many services that will be shown to you as options. You will have to select the service that you want to use. For example, 1 for balance enquiry. After you type 1 and press “ok” you will be asked to enter your 4 digit PIN number. Enter this and then continue.

  3. Mini statement

The USSD menu will next show you the option of viewing a mini statement of your account. From the Welcome Screen you can press the number allotted to mini statement. For example, in Corporation Bank’s account, the mini statement will be on option #2. So you have to type 2 and click “OK” or “SEND” to view your mini statement.

  4. IMPS fund transfer

Do you want to transfer funds via your mobile phone? You can do that using the IMPS service. Just press the button to open the IMPS transfer option. After opening you will see two options – IMPS to mobile and IMPS to account. If you choose the mobile option you have to press 1. This will prompt you to enter the beneficiary’s mobile number, MMID and the amount.

If you choose the account option you have to enter 2. This will prompt you to enter the IFSC code and the account number, followed by the amount.

Note: If you are carrying out transactions on a different bank, then you might be given two options – Transfer money via MMID and transfer money via IFSC. In this case too, the process will remain the same. You have to enter the appropriate number corresponding to the service and enter the IFSC and MMID number wherever necessary.

  1. Generate OTP or MPIN

Some banks will ask you to generate OTP. To finalize the transaction, you will have to generate an OTP which you will have to enter on the USSD menu.Similarly, some banks will give you an MPIN and to successfully transfer money, you will have to enter the MPIN after the previous few steps.

USSD limitations and charges

With USSD you can send money as low as Rs. 1. However the upper limit is set at Rs. 5000 per transaction. You will also be charged 0.50 per transaction which will be billed to your telecom operator. It must be noted that the charges have been waived until December 31st, 2016. Also, this service can be availed 24/7.

Also, once the USSD popup shows up you will have to respond within 10 seconds, or you have to begin from scratch. So it is quite a tedious process. However, the service is still at its early stages and is likely grow to become simpler in future.
